INTRODUCTION: Objective: To compare functional outcomes of proximal femoral nail (PFN) and bipolar hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures.
METHODS: Methods: A retrospective cohort study including 51 patients treated between 2016 and 2020. Demographics, perioperative data, and functional outcomes (Harris Hip Score and Oxford Hip Score) were analyzed.
RESULTS: Results: Patients in the hemiarthroplasty group were older. No significant differences were observed in operative time or hemoglobin changes. Functional scores were higher in the hemiarthroplasty group.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Conclusion: Although more favorable functional score distributions were observed in the hemiarthroplasty group, the retrospective design and baseline differences between the groups preclude conclusions regarding the superiority of either treatment. Treatment selection should be individualized according to patient and fracture characteristics.
