INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the distribution and frequency of eyelid masses surgically removed in our clinic, and to compare demographic features of benign versus malignant lesions.
METHODS: The histopathologic results of 80 patients who underwent eyelid mass excision in our clinic between April 2014 and June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Patient age, gender, lesion localization, and histopathological diagnoses were documented. The lesions were classified as benign and malignant.
RESULTS: The study included 80 patients, with 39 males (48.8%) and 41 females (51.2%). Their average age was 48.3 ± 24.1 years. Among the tumors, 58 (72.5%) were benign, and 22 (27.5%) were malignant. The average age of patients with benign tumors was 39.9 ± 22.6 years, whereas those with malignant tumors averaged 70.5 ± 9.5 years. The most frequent benign lesions included squamous papilloma and intradermal nevus, while basal cell carcinoma was the most common malignant lesion.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Though most eyelid masses are benign, malignant lesions are actually more frequent in older individuals. Surgical excision and histopathologic examination are of great importance in all suspicious eyelid masses because clinical appearance does not always predict histopathologic diagnosis.
